Brightblack Morning Light Is Your New Favorite Band [Music]

Hippy dreams and silver moon beams are the stuff Brightblack Morning Light is made of, so consider yourself lucky.

This kind of unpologetic hippy jamming grooviness actually, completely works on all levels and all must buy their first album from ‘07, as well as their new one Motion to Rejoin, just out now.

Or you can just eat a handful of mushrooms, throw on something with fringe and head to their dates listed below. The two-piece, Western U.S. force of nature on the esteemed Matador label has begun a last-minute slap dash tour with star-aligned dates across the country. Lead singer Nathan Shinywater says the record was cut on solar power (word!), is anti-coal (Hmm), anti-nuclear (Hmmmm) and pro-ganja (given). To that end, here’s a coal-fired audio sample via imeem (in trippy blood color, no less):

ARTIST STATEMENT

ANTI COAL & NUCLEAR

Previous to this recording, while BBML toured Europe, singer Naybob Shineywater sang each show with an arrowhead in his mouth. Why? To let his own sung words & breathe touch this stone before european ears could hear them.

“I was not singing for war, but to engage the spirit of the maker of the arrowhead itself, to offer up Peace, that his warrior effort find a new respect, and to help my own warrior spirit sing in Peace,” reveals Naybob.

After returning from the european tour a chance to move in to an adobe on a secluded enchanted mesa came to Naybob. With only 4 solar panels, it matched his desire to live in a meager way while making the 2nd BBML Lp. “Motion To Rejoin” is anti nuclear & coal, but also aligned with the phases of the sun.

“With only 4 solar panels you are entirley dependent upon how much the sun is shining,” informs Naybob.

WHAT IS SOUTHERN MUSIC?

The blues & gospel & country music beginnings came about because of a lifestyle, not because someone in a city imitated the sum result. This music evolves from Shineywater & Hughes own Alabama roots. “We feel like Southern music should be played by Southern people & don’t dig it when other folks imitate accents. Posturing is a disease, awaken the inner Self! We both grew up in Alabama, yet we both left for the same reason, the environmental degradation due to corporate development is staggering & unchecked, it makes us disgusted. However, in the Western USA we are gathered with the many folks to protect wilderness, rivers & oceans. Ecology has a place in the West’s culture, even if it’s on a small scale right now,” tells Shineywater & Hughes.

The Lp’s instrumentation is sparse, “We have hauled a vintage 1979 Rhodes into almost every major city’s bar in the USA!” claims pianist Hughes, who’s piano is at the center mix of the songs. Playing the bass lines in conjunction with other aspects of the rhythms give Hughes a unique piano style. Beginning as a child playing piano with her grandmother, but now focused on playing with Shineywater’s own brand of guitar based song writing has birthed a steady reeling piano hand.

POLITICS: LEGALIZATION OF NATVE HERBS

“Marijuana is a native herb from North America & a progressive society should include it’s legalization, this debate can only be renewed when lies about it have been answered with truths, by now we know that most responsible pot smokers are not criminal, to the contrary, they actually care about Peace & Unity in ways that help define true Freedom!” ~N. Shineywater

WHO WE’D LIKE TO MEET

“If we are playing your town & you have some new information specifically on local environmental justice issues, please approach the band’s vending table with any printed pamphlets explaining the issue with ways folks can take action. Also look for the Defenders Of Wildlife Journal, available free at our table. If you are a journalist working with our Matador/Beggar’s Publicist, feel free to mention a local environmental issue in your state you’d like our comment on.”
