Vintage Baatin footage from Slum Village's heydaze [Wax Poetics]
Wax Poetics writer and Chicagoan Ronnie Reese ranks among the smartest, savviest music writers in the world. So we’re happy to share some footage of Slum Village rapper Baatin and T3 that Ronnie and posse shot in Chicago in 2000. Word up, WaxPo.
The background:
Slum Village was a critically influential hip hop group from Detroit, most known for incubating iconic producer Jay Dee. Alongside T3 and Baatin, the three childhood friends released 1996’s Fantastic, Vol. 1, an underground rap talisman. In 1998, the group opened for A Tribe Called Quest and in June 2000 they released Fantastic, Vol. 2 on GoodVibe Recordings.
Dilla left in 2002 and died on February 10, 2006 after being diagnosed with TTP and lupus. Baatin died on July 31, 2009. The cause is unknown.
Baatin’s body was found this morning in the 14000 block of Anglin Street, said family friend Ty Townson, who was at the scene as Baatin’s body was taken to the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office.
