Surely, RFID will end jail escapes, forced sodomy, routine beatings [Don't Call Me Shirley]

Jail escapes, inmate violence and sexual assaults will surely come to a dramatic end, now that a Washington D.C. prison has outfitted its inmates with record amounts of privacy-annihilating RFID bracelets.

“We will have the largest application of RFID in the country,” Dept. of Corrections chief Devon Brown told the Congressional State News.

Each of the 2,164 inmates will wear an RFID bracelet and every 25 to 50 feet a computer monitor will receive the signals sent from the RFID chips embedded in the bracelets. Those monitors keep tabs on all the inmates in real time.

There are only about 10 prison facilities that use or plan to use RFID, Brown said and only one was recently evaluated—by the Urban Institute, which released a report in October. The technology was supposed to help staff identify inmate misconduct as it happens, as well as deter inmates from sexual assault, consensual sex, fighting and other violence …

But according to the Urban Institute’s evaluation, “rates of inmate misconduct did not change significantly over the evaluation period”. So, essentially, none of that shit actually happened. But surely it will now. Surely.
